We are in the midst of an unparalleled economic crisis and global pandemic. More than 1.2 million Washington workers have filed for unemployment insurance as thousands of businesses have shuttered, some forever. For many families, safety net services are the only thing putting food on their tables and a roof over their heads.
Yet, many trickle-downers and their allies in the Legislature, big business chambers, and newspaper editorial boards have relentlessly called for knee-jerk budget cuts that will burden the families, small businesses, and everyday people that are struggling to stay afloat. Meanwhile, Republicans are petitioning Governor Inslee to "re-open the economy" and put hundreds of thousands of lives at risk, and The Seattle Times editorial board is demanding cuts to essential benefits and services that will worsen the suffering for Washington families and history has proven will deepen the recession and prolong recovery.
Simply put, your representatives need to hear from you that budget cuts are not the answer. You can’t starve your way out of a recession, but you can grow out of it. The only way to save Washington’s economy is to inject capital back into it through increasing investments and direct support for workers and small businesses to stimulate growth. Our elected leaders must act with short- and long-term plans that are immediate, impactful, and inclusive of all Washingtonians.
